Day 1 of the 2014 Men’s Youth Pan Am Championships, which is the continental qualifier for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, Nanjing, China, was definitely a day of many goals. The first match of Day 1 was between USA and Mexico. USA scored within the 1st minute of the match making excellent use of the boards and placing Mexico under intense pressure from the onset. A defensive error from Mexico caused an easy tap in for USA’s 2nd goal. USA enjoyed the lion’s share of the attack in the 1st period which ended 2-0, in favor of USA.
With the adoption of a heavy passing game, effective use of the boards and quick substitutions USA enjoyed greater control of the contest and scored a 1 vs. 1 against the keeper from a quick break away, reverse stick goal by USA # 8 Joshua Schindler for their 3rdgoal. Mexico scored their 1st goal by from a long pass from the left followed by a firm sweep into the goal from #8 R. Lemus Diaz in the 24th minute. The 2nd period ended 3-1 in favor of USA.
Mexico scored their 2nd goal of the match in the 1st few minutes of the 3rd period to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of USA. USA then won a penalty challenge, which was skillfully taken by #11, D. Huisman to bring the score to 4-2 in favor of USA. In reply Mexico came storming back to score within a minute to bring the score to 4-3 in favor of USA. USA #11, Huisman scores yet again to bring the score to 5-3 in favor if USA. Mexico score within 2 minutes to keep themselves in the game with a fighting chance. With intense pressure on a tiring USA defense, Mexico score again, with another goal by #10, B. Chavez Gomez to level scores at 5-5 only seconds before the close of the 3rd period. The game ended 5-5.
