Jeffery MONCION’s second half hatrick led Dominican Republic to a resounding 8-0 victory in their second Pool A match against Guatemala and their first victory in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games (2014).
Dominican Republic had the better of the attacking play for most of the first half but they found it hard to break down Guatemala’s dogged defence until the 23rd minute when Jorge NIVAR scored from a penalty corner to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Guatemala tried to hit Dominican Republic on the counter attack but their attacks were ably dealt with by Dominican Republic’s defence. Guatemala’s goalkeeper Gabriel GUZMAN made several outstanding penalty corner saves in the last five minutes of the half denying Dominican Republic a 2nd goal. The first half ended with Dominican Republic leading 1-0.
It was a tale of two halves however as the floodgates opened with an inspired Dominican Republic scoring 7 goals in the second half. Francisco GARCIA, Hugo CRUZ and Michael LOPEZ scored one goal each to make it 4-0 in the 44th minute. MONCION’s then scored his 3 goals in the space of 10 minutes with Francisco BLANCO adding a goal in the 57th minute.
Guatemala remain winless after two games are at the bottom of Pool A.
