The final match on Day 1 of the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games (Women) saw the host country Mexico overcome a very spirited and determined Barbados 2-0 in Pool A.
The home team started the game very well and created a number of penalty corners in the early exchanges but they were unable to convert any of them. As the game progressed, Barbados buoyed by their cheering supporters, grew in confidence and like their opponents they earned several penalty corners that they could not put away. Despite the end to end action the first half ended 0-0.
Mexico started the 2nd half very well and Captain Michel NAVARRO got the breakthrough goal from a well worked penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute, much to the delight of the home fans. Mexico seized the momentum and Captain NAVARRO scored her second goal 2 minutes later to make it 2-0.
Barbados despite being two goals down showed fierce determination and created several scoring chances in the last 20 minutes of the game but were let down by faulty finishing. The Mexican defence ensured that their team held on to their 2-0 lead at the final whistle.
