Barbados (who was 3rd in Pool A) came away 3-0 winners in their crossover 5th-8th place match against Bermuda (who was 4th in Pool B) at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games (Women).
Bermuda put in a very good defensive shift in the first half to hold Barbados to a 0-0 score at half time. Barbados led by Captain Dionne CLARKE in midfield created numerous chances with the best opportunity coming in the 17th minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke when a penalty corner was saved by the body of a Bermudian defender. Unfortunately for Barbados, Patrina BRATHWAITE’s flick went wide of the goal and they missed a great opportunity to take the lead. Barbados was also let down by their poor penalty corner execution throughout the half.
Bermuda led by Captain Francesca CACAE was very compact and organized in defense and goalkeeper Antoinette RABAIN was called on to make several key saves to help her team keep a clean sheet the first half. However they were very lucky when Barbados’ Cher KING last minute strike hit the upright and was cleared to safety.
Barbados greatly improved their penalty corner efficiency in the second half and were rewarded with 3 goals from their set plays. Charlia WARNER scored the first in the 41st minute and Captain CLARKE added two more in the 58th and 65th minute. Barbados’ Joanna DAVIS was a rock in defence and was instrumental in nullifying all of Bermuda’s attacks.
Barbados and Bermuda will be in action again on 23 November 2014 for the placement games against the winner and loser of the other crossover match between Guyana and Jamaica.
