Two goals by Venessa CHEWITT helped Barbados secure 5th place at the Central American and Caribbean Games (Women) when they beat Guyana 3-0.
Barbados forced Guyana’s goalkeeper Alysa XAVIER into several important saves in the opening 10 minutes of the 1st half as Cher KING and Patrina BRATHWAITE got past Guyana’s defenders regularly and got their shots off with relative ease. After several missed penalty corners, Barbados’ Keisha JORDAN made no mistake when the ball deflected off a defender’s into her path to give her team a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Barbados continued to pile the pressure on Guyana and Venessa CHEWITT made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute when she dribbled across the circle and blasted a shot past goalkeeper XAVIER.
Guyana made several attacking forays in last 10 minutes of the half but were not able to get behind Barbados’ defensive line.
Once again Barbados started the half brightly making regular inroads in Guyana’s defence but they could not get the ball past goalkeeper XAVIER. Guyana had a good attacking spell for around 10 minutes but a turnover in midfield lead to a fast break by Barbados and CHEWITT added her second goal of the match to give her team an unassailable 3-0 lead.
