Cuba scored four goals in the final quarter to outlast Peru and take a 7-0 victory in the first consolation semifinal on Day 10 at the Pan American Games in Lima.
The game was scoreless through the opening quarter but Peru keeper Guillermo Power had most of the action. It wasn’t until the 27th minute that Cuba were able to get on the board after a series of failed penalty corners. Juan Lopez flicked low to beat Power and give Cuba a 1-0 lead which stood at half time.
Peru moved the ball forward with the speed and persistence from forwards Antonio Piazza and Sebastian Dennison but a lack of support from behind left them at the mercy of the Cuba defence. Roger Aguilera added a second goal for Cuba late in the second quarter but only after Power saved a shot from Carlos Consuegra and then Maikel Tritzant. Richard Somonte made it 3-0 to end the third quarter as he put in a pass from Carlos Consuegra.
In the fourth quarter Peru were unable to manage the constant Cuba attack despite strong defence from Fabrizio Corno and several saves from Power. Consuegra, Tritzant, Iraidys Calderon and Wildredo Sanchez all finished to give Cuba the 7-0 win.
The victory will move Cuba in to the 5/6th place game which will automatically improve their eighth-place finish in 2015, while in 2011 Cuba finished fourth. Peru, in their first-ever appearance at the Pan American Games will play for 7/8th.
