Match Report

Uruguay to play for fifth after big win over Brazil

Kaisuami Dall’orso, Milagros Algorta and Maria Teresa Viana Ache each scored two goals as Uruguay powered their way 8-0 over Brazil to now play for fifth place in the tournament.

Uruguay took charge of the match against Brazil from the get-go as they found themselves with their first penalty corner chance in just the 4th minute of play. A lay-off left option to Milagros Algorta was fired towards goal but the glove of Brazil keeper Andrea Gomes kept Urugay at bay. Kaisuami Dall’orso scored the game’s opening goal a minute later as she knocked in a loose ball in a goalmouth scramble. From there the scoring gates were open as Maria Teresa Viana Ache dribbled around Gomes in the 15th minute but her shot was stopped on the line by the body of Brazilian defender Anna de Almeida. The resulting penalty stroke was put in my Algorta for a 2-0 Uruguay lead.

Uruguay added four more goals to their tally before half time as Algorta put in a pass from Viana Ache to make it 3-0 in the 17th minute. Clementina Cristiani scored in the 20th minute one-timing the ball high into the net for 4-0. Manuela Vilar’s solo efforts earned Uruguay their fifth goal in the 21st minute. Brazil defender Urusula Machado dos Santos defended a penalty corner shot from Vilar late in the second quarter. Viana Ache put in a rebound off a Uruguay penalty corner just before the half time whistle to make it 6-0 at half.

Brazil changed their keepers at half time and Teska Tuijt was in fine form as she defended a Vilar flick with her out-stretched right toe in the 35th minute. Tuijt kept Uruguay off the board for the whole third quarter but Dall’orso and Viana Ache were each able to score their second goal of the game for a final score of 8-0 over Brazil. Uruguay will now prepare to play Mexico for 5th place on Sunday at 13:45. Brazil will finish the tournament in 7th place.
