For the second-straight time Uruguay finish fifth at the Pan American Games after a 4-0 win over Mexico. Manuela Vilar scored two goals to help the Cimarronas secure the top of the consolation bracket.
Mexico opened with the first scoring chance in the ninth minute on a penalty corner but Jennifer Valdes’ shot went over the Uruguay goal. Uruguay had two penalty corner chances that they could not finish on. The game went scoreless through two quarters and Mexico’s Jesus Castillo stood strong in goal steering away shots from Teresa Viana Ache and Vilar through the first half.
Uruguay finally got on the board in the 32nd minute after a rebound shot on a penalty corner was stopped by a Mexico defender’s body on the line. Vilar made no mistake from the penalty stroke mark to lift Uruguay 1-0.
In the 39th minute Uruguay doubled their lead thanks to a strong run through the field from Vilar. Vilar dished the ball left to Anastasia Olave who found Vilar in the middle of the circle to make it 2-0.
Mexico pushed for a goal but couldn’t connect on their passes up front. Fernanda Oviedo was the majority of Mexico’s attack but even on a penalty corner with four minutes to go Mexico couldn’t muster a shot.
Uruguay added two more goals late in the game. Camila de Maria flicked in a low shot to make it 3-0 in the 57th minute while, Agustina Nieto’s shot was deflected in by a defender seconds before the final whistle to make it 4-0.
