Field Hockey Canada and the Pan American Hockey Federation are delighted to announce the opportunity for FHC and PAHF umpires to attend the 2008 Pan American Umpiring Seminar which will be held during the final playing weekend of the Women’s Olympic Qualifier, 2-4 May 2008 in Victoria, Canada.

Who can attend? - Participants
Want to take your umpiring to the next level? Then attending this seminar is an excellent opportunity for you to observe quality hockey teams and world class umpires in action. It is a must for all active male and female umpires who are working towards obtaining or have achieved their countries National Umpiring Accreditation Level, and would gain immense benefit from sharing & developing their knowledge about umpiring.

Course Facilitator
We are honoured to have Jane Nockolds as our facilitator. Jane is an FIH Umpire’s Manager who has recently been appointed to the Olympics in Beijing. She is a former FIH World Cup Umpire and currently holds the position of National Manager for Technical, Volunteers & Officiating with England Hockey. She is an outstanding, well respected and experienced presenter who will bring a wealth of knowledge and energy to the seminar.

Course Content
The sessions will be a combination of:

  • Classroom presentation, interaction and discussions (with the emphasis on what makes a good umpire, understanding the game, interpretations, consistency in decision making, game management, etc.)
  • Practical observing of the final weekend action of the Olympic Qualifier matches
  • See how the latest FIH video analysis technology can help improve the world of umpiring
  • Group work and presentations

    Accommodation & Host Hotel
    The Accent Inn Hotel has been chosen as the host hotel for the seminar. It is located about 7km from the University of Victoria. A room block is being held for the seminar participants until the 1 April 2008. The room rate is at the discounted rate of $89 CDN plus tax.

    Please Note: all seminar participants are responsible for their own housing and must make their own reservations. It is encouraged that the umpire seminar attendees room with other attendees if possible. To assist with this an e-mail list of participants will be forwarded to all those registered after the deadline registration date.

    The Victoria International Airport is located 30 minutes from downtown Victoria. Victoria International Airport serves daily flights from Vancouver International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma Airport, as well as direct flights from points throughout Canada and the United States.     International Participants
    Seminar participants to Canada from countries other than the United States must have a valid passport. You may also require a visa which you are responsible for obtaining. Please visit the http://www.goingtocanada.gc.ca/visiting/travelling-to.aspx web site for more information.

    Airport Transport
    We apologise, but at this time we are unable to offer transport from the airport to the Accent Inn hotel. However, there is a shuttle service departing every 1/2 hour from Victoria Airport to the hotel and the university, which you can find at: http://www.victoriaairportshuttle.com/. The cost is approximately $ 10 - $15 person.

    Seminar Participant Fee
    The course is limited to 30 participants and we anticipate a full attendance. For administration purposes, the seminar registration will close on Friday 14 March 2008 (late registration will be accepted if any participants cancel and will be based on a first named waiting list with fee set at Standard Fee.)

  • Early Bird fee up to Friday 22 February: $140.00 CDN (money order in Canadian funds) or $150.00 CDN (credit card only)
  • Standard fee : $180.00 CDN (credit card only) from Saturday 23 February 2008 onwards

    Regardless of how you register, please await receipt of your official Email confirmation before making your travel arrangements to attend the Seminar. Travel details will be requested at a later date.

    Waiting List
    As registration is expected to fill quickly, we will keep a waiting list. In the event someone has to cancel, their place will be offered to the first person on the waiting list at the set Standard Fee.

    Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellation before 14 March, then a $30 administration charge will be deducted from the refund of their registration fee.
  • Cancellation after the 14 March, unfortunately no refund will be offered.
  • If, in the unlikely event the Seminar has to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, all participants will receive a full refund of their registration fee.
