The No. 19-ranked Canadians pushed the World No. 4 USA team to their max through 60 minutes of play taking points away from them in a 1-1 draw. It was a night of set pieces as Amanda Magadan deflected in for USA in the opening minute, while Rachel Donohoe buried a penalty corner chance for Canada in the third quarter.
Hosts USA wasted no time getting on the board as they raced into Canadian territory to earn a penalty corner. Michelle Vittese delivered a rocket sweep to the far post for Magadan to deflect perfectly into the goal for a 1-0 USA lead. USA had a chance to double their lead in the 4th minute but the deflection off Kat Sharkey’s hard shot was saved at the post by Danielle Hennig. Canada had two quality chances in the quarter including Karli Johansen’s penalty corner flick being saved by a diving Jackie Briggs in the 10th minute. In the 15th minute Johansen sent a seemingly harmless ball into the USA circle but the ball hit the post and bounced to an open Hannah Haughn but her quick shot was denied by the experienced Briggs who slid across the open goal.
Despite possession favouring the Americans it was Canada who had the best quality chances. In the 21st minute Nikki Woodcroft made her way into the circle and her skills allowed Brienne Stairs a take at goal but Briggs’ outstretched foot was a wall. Canada had another penalty corner chance that was deemed dangerous and while USA generated several circle entries through Sharkey, Vittesse and captain Melissa Gonzales USA were unable to get anything towards goal.
The third quarter was fast paced and physical. Stairs went on a tear for Canada eliminating three players in midfield before earning Canada a corner. Donohoe’s sweep from the top deflected off a USA defender to get the all-important tying goal. The USA were right down the other end earning a penalty corner but Vittese’s sweep hit was denied yet again at the post by Hennig. Both teams traded passes in midfield, evidence of just how tight the game was.
USA had their best chance in the 51st minute when a ball was smashed to Ali Froede on the right side of the circle. Froede’s cross was then perfectly sent to Jill Witmer but her one-timer fired high and wide of the net.
With less than five minutes left to play USA had two penalty corner chances, while within a two-minute span three Canadians were dealt yellow cards. With the advantage, USA pushed hard to the other end but diving Canadian defenders kept the Americans off the board and the two teams were left at a 1-1 standstill, which was more than indicative of the play.
