JPAC - DAY 2

Barbados VS Chile (Women)

In the opening game of the day, both teams played their first match of the tournament. From the first whistle Chile made their intentions known with a scoop into their opponents “D” resulting in a penalty corner. The Bajan ladies were unable to defend the penalty corner and Chile went ahead in the 2nd minute 1-0. This would set the tone for the game as the Chile side continued their dominance to end the first quarter 5-0. The young and inexperienced Barbadian players took a while to adjust to the pace of Chile’s game. However, the Bajan ladies appeared more confident as the quarters progressed resulting in Chile scoring their goals later and later in each quarter. Nonetheless, Chile continued on their quest to victory scoring 4 goals in the second quarter. By the start of the second half it was noticeable that both the players’ and their fans were defeated, however the girls continued to give of their best and the fans continued to provide their support. The 4th quarter saw Chile capitalize on their opponent’s fatigue and frustration scoring the most goals of any quarter of the game netting 6. The final score of 20-0 was no reflection on the young goalkeeper Ysobel Jones’ performance. Rather, she and her teammates each earned their very first cap in this game. Special mention goes out to Chile’s Valdes Dominga and Arrieta Victoria who scored 4 and 5 goals respectively.

Guyana VS Canada (Women)

The first quarter saw Canada dominating the Guyanese team using the width of the field to their advantage to penetrate the circle successfully which lead the to a 1-0 lead. Canada’s young ladies quickly acclimatized in their first match of the tournament to score four goals in the second quarter. Despite Guyana’s best efforts, the Canadian side continued their debauchery in the 3 and 4th quarters scoring 3 and 4 goals in each quarter respectively. Credit should be given to the Guyanese ladies as they fought to the end while playing on an unfamiliar pitch. The inexperience side showed bravery and held their heads high as they conceded 12-0.

Argentina VS Chile (Men)

In one of the biggest and perhaps a very familiar match up among two teams, the game’s intensity was difficult to miss from the start. Marco Aguirre Gomez Corta received Argentina’s first green card in the 14th minute. Argentina would score their first and only goal of the quarter by way of a penalty corner in the final minute. As the momentum swung Argentina’s way going into the second quarter, Chile tried their best not to be outdone. The Chile side fought to level the game but was unsuccessful as Argentina netted yet another goal in the second quarter. Chile would receive their first of 2 green cards in the 23rd minute. Opening what would prove to be another exciting half Argentina scored 3 goals in the third and 2 in the final quarter while Chile received their 2nd green card just one minute before the end of play. It was a tough day on the field for Chile and Argentina’s quest for the top spot continued as the score line ended 7-0.

Barbados VS Guyana (Men)

In a highly anticipated game between the only two Caribbean countries in this tournament, both teams had a point to prove. Despite the Barbados team having the edge, playing in front of their fans, Shaquan Favorite scored his first international goal for his country to lead Guyana to a 1-0 victory. The intensity remained high during the game, however, the Barbados team failed to capitalize on their opportunities when they penetrated the Guyanese defense. A total of 6 penalty corners in the game resulted in no additional goals. Worth mentioning is Barbadian Goalkeeper Tyrese Weeks who absorbed pressure from the Guyanese attacking players who looked threatening as they advanced into his circle. Favourite, the lone goal scorer of the game, received a green card in the 34th minute for a bad tackle which resulted in a collision between he and a Barbadian player.  Barbados also received two green cards in the 41st and 52nd minute. With only five minutes left Guyana was given their 2nd and final green card of the game. This game proved to be entertaining as both teams played a very competitive game until the final whistle.
